Environment and Sustainability

Clare College has consistently ranked at the top of the University's Green Impact competition, winning more awards than any other College or department. We were the first College to win a Platinum Award for our overall environmental performance, which is the highest award available and our students, staff and Fellow continue to share a commitment to reduce the College's environmental footprint.

Our facilities

  • Our Gillespie Centre was built to the highest standards of sustainability, and uses solar thermal panels and a ground source heat pump for efficient heating and cooling. Energy consumption is kept to a minimum with extensive insulation and large, solar-coated, south facing windows limit heat gain in the summer, keeping guests cool at all times
  • Two of our main accommodation sites now have sedum roofs, and the recent refurbishment of another site incorporated some Swift boxes in the brickwork

Energy

  • The College's electricity is sourced from 100% renewable sources, with our larger buildings supplied by Cambridgeshire solar farms, and the remainder from other renewable sources

Catering

  • Our products are locally sourced where possible, and we aim to use seasonal produce, regularly updating our menus. We are environmentally sensitive and are committed to using local suppliers to cut down the carbon footprint
  • During our term time, every Monday is Vegetarian Day in our self-service Buttery, where we offer vegetarian and vegan options daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • We work hard to reduce the amount of waste that we produce from the College's kitchens and Buttery

Travel

  • The College van has now been replaced by an electric van
  • The College offers on site bicycle storage, free for guest usage
